Bad-ass Lindy Hop Workshop

The i’s are dotted and the t’s crossed. We have a full weekend lined up for you with great pre-registration deals. This is an intermediate/advanced workshop and is totally bad-ass. Please be aware of that before you register.

Here’s what else is going on that weekend:

3 nights of dancing (Thursday, Friday and Saturday)
RDU Rent Party: Bad Mofo Edition with music by the talented New Orleans style combo, The New King Rippers. This dance is pay-what-you-can and all proceeds go to paying the band!
Lots of chances to eat, drink and be merry with your friends in the “foodiest small town in America.”

Registration will be capped at 50 (25 leaders and 25 followers) so register soon (we expect to sell out). Registration opens 06/06 at noon and closes at midnight on July 15th.

All That Jazz – With Mike Herring

Jazz dance is the vital underpinning of swing dance. Without jazz movement, and tap rhythms and syncopations we wouldn’t have Charleston, Balboa, Lindy Hop or any other swing-era dance. To that end Hot Club would like to offer the opportunity to learn authentic Jazz steps and routines as often as possible.

That’s why we’re having Mike Herring from Charlottesville, Virginia come to Hot Club for two weeks and teach his amazing routine to “Back Bay Shuffle” by Artie Shaw. You won’t want to miss it.

What: Jazz Routine with Mike Herring
When: May 19th and May 26th at 7pm – 8pm (Before Hot Club)

About Mike Herring

Mike Herring is a DJ, Dancer, Teacher, and Organizer Extrodinaire! He is one of the founders of Swing C’ville and runs the monthly dances and classes in Charlottesville.

Mike has been tap dancing since he was six and continues to perform at regional events, including Southside Stomp in Norfolk.

Mike’s skills as a choreographer are unmatched, and his routines are up-beat, challenging and incredibly fun.

Happy New Year Everyone! Hot Club is revving up and raring to go for the new year. We are planning on making this year bigger and better then the last. To that end, we have a full line-up of classes starting January 11th, and we’ve got a couple of special classes coming up.

New Stuff!

Intermediate Lindy Hop (Thursdays at 7pm, ongoing)

This is the class you’ve been waiting for and we are doing it differently than any of our other classes. This class will be pay-per-class and will be tailored to the needs of the group that shows up every night. It will be $13 ($10) for the class and and admission to the dance that night! So you can show up for class, go to Cool Club, and then come back and practice. The first month will focus on connection, center movement, and balance.

You should come to this class if you have outgrown the beginner level and are yearning for more!

Intro to Classic Burlesque (Tuesdays 1/18 – 2/22 at 9pm)

Miss Bliss will be teaching the art of classic burlesque for us! Classes include history, glove and stocking work, solo and group routines, and a class performance at the end. It’s also inexpensive! Only $55 for a six-week series!

Tuesdays (01/11 – 02/15)

7pm: Beginner East Coast 1 (Single-Step East Coast)

The well-known 6-count single step version of swing dancing. As a pure beginner, you can get your swing on quickly with East Coast Swing.

8pm: Beginner East Coast 2 (Triple-Step East Coast)

8pm: Beginner Charleston 1 (20′s Style)

The grandfather of all swing dances! It’s upbeat, fun, and easy to learn. This class will give you the foundations you need to get out on the dance floor ASAP.

9pm: Lindy Hop 2

11/11 Swing Dance and Fastest Feet Competition!

Fastest Feet? Yeah, it’s that time again! We have two tickets to the awesome Chifferobe Vintage Night with the Atomic Rhythm Allstars, performances, and more. The winner of our competition will get those tickets and the crown of “Fastest Feet in the Triangle.” Our current crown holders are Chris Wells and Laura Windley. the contest open to anyone and any style of dance. You can Balboa, East Coast, Lindy Hop, Turkey Trot, or Peabody, just do it fast and do it well!

November/December Classes

Hot Club has been doing great recently! We’ve had an infusion of new dancers from our Groupon deal, our dances have been well attended, and we’ve been getting some great opportunities to bring swing dancing to the larger Triangle community. On that note, our upcoming classes are the last session of they year for us and we are totally jazzed about them.

Hot Club of Durham offers a unique learning experience in the Triangle and we plan to bring you even more cool events and awesome perks in the future. We have simple on-line registration and on-line private lesson booking at http://hotclubofdurham.com.

We are also the only swing teachers in the area who offer two passes to our Thursday dance included with you registration to class, and we offer free retakes of any class series that you have already paid for.

Classes are $75 per 6-week (some exceptions this session) series, and are held at the Trotter Building, 410 W Geer St, Durham, NC 27701.

Here’s our lineup:

Beginner East Coast 1 (Thursdays, 11/11 – 12/23 at 7pm) *Starts this week!!!*

The well-known 6-count single step version of swing dancing. As a pure beginner, you can get your swing on quickly with East Coast Swing. Joe Jackson will be teaching this class.

Beginner East Coast 2 (Tuesdays, 11/30 – 12/21 at 7pm)

*Classes will be 1.5 hours long and there will be only 4 of them*

This is where we really put the “swing” into swing dancing. Triple step east coast will teach you to glide across the dance floor with ease. You’ll learn some of the same material you learned in Beginner East Coast 1, but it will look ten times cooler. Joe Jackson will be teaching this class.

Beginner Balboa 1 (Tuesdays, 11/30 – 12/21 at 9pm)

*Classes will be 1.5 hours long and there will be only 4 of them*

A close-position dance; the alternate universe’s answer to Lindy Hop. Derived from Charleston, created in California. Instructors: Cliff Dyer & Partner (TBA)

Beginner Lindy Hop 1 (Wednesdays, 12/01 – 12/22 at 8:30pm)

*Classes will be 1.5 hours long and there will be only 4 of them*

The Original swing dance, derived from Charleston. Learn the swing out, lindy circle, and fun related variations. Chris Wells will be teaching this class.

We are super excited to be a part of this month’s Chifferobe event at Cuban Revolution this week! WE will be offering a beginner East Coast lesson, a performance with Joe Jackson and Laura Windley. We will also be serenaded by swingingest band in the Triangle, the indomitable Atomic Rhythm Allstars, wowed by the Magic Roman, and bowled over by the dance styling of Kristen Minsky. All-in-all this is a night of Vintage debauchery that you don’t want to miss.

Our next session of classes is coming soon. We have some awesome classes coming up for you this next session. People who are currently in Balboa 1 should look at Balboa 2 and those in East Coast 2 should be looking to move on to Lindy Hop 1. If you are new and don’t know where to start, you can email or call, or just sign up for East Coast 1.

We have another half-price special this session! I will be teaching a Solo Jazz Intensive, which will be an upbeat, fast-paced class dedicated to teaching the hows, and why of awesome solo Jazz dance. You will learn a tricked out version of the Shim-Sham (think awesome footwork and rhythm variations) and the Tranky Doo. This 6 weeks series is only $40($30 for students!). See below for more inforamtion.

Classes are 6 weeks long and include 2 passes to our Thursday night swing dances! Here’s what we have coming up:

With this class under your belt you will have a strong foundation in Balboa. You will also be able to smoothly transition from Balboa to any other swing dance you know. There will be more work on foundations, footwork, and stylish moves.

9pm: Beginner Lindy Hop 1

The original swing dance, derived from Charleston. Learn the swing out, lindy circle, and fun related variations.

Thursdays 09/23 – 11/04 (No class on 09/30)

7pm: Jazz Intensive (This session’s half-price deal)

Prerequisites: Enthusiasm and some dance experience

This is the butt-kicking solo jazz class that you’ve been waiting for. Learn all the fundamentals of solo jazz through the medium of two amazing jazz routines:

Shim Sham (x-treme) – Learn “the way of the Swedes” and find out how to make this well known dance really pop.
Tranky Doo - Choreographed by Frankie Manning himself, this routine always impresses. You will learn to make it shine.
